February 3, 2014 — Big Cross elementary students will be going home with free books to keep, after a School District Foundation of Glens Falls donation to keep the “Reading Is Fundamental (RIF)” program going.
Foundation board members Kris Hatch and former GFSD superintendent Tom McGowan presented Big Cross staff members and PTA representatives with a $500 gift that replaces some of the lost funding for this annual program.
Historically, the RIF program combined federal funding with PTA donations to provide new, age-appropriate books for each Big Cross student to take home and keep. The program’s goal is to increase reading at home and improve students’ literacy skills.
Big Cross parent and Fifth Ward Councilman Jim Clark was on hand for the check presentation, along with Principal Debbie Hall and PTA President Jaime Wright.
