Dear Parents and Guardians:
This morning at Big Cross, staff members and law enforcement responded to an unsettling individual on school grounds, which resulted in a lockout at the school.
At approximately 8:20 a.m., I spoke with a man sitting on a bench near our playground. I asked him to leave school grounds, and when he refused, we called Glens Falls Police for assistance. Out of an abundance of caution, staff members immediately brought all students into the building and we entered into lockout (not lockdown) status.
Our district-wide safety plan calls for a lockout in response to an actual or potential threat from outside the building. During a lockout, all students and staff must be inside the building, all exterior doors are locked, and classes continue “as usual” inside the school. Anyone entering or exiting the building must be individually approved by the designated staff member stationed at the door during the lockout.
The lockout lasted about 40 minutes, while GFPD officers responded and secured the situation at an off-site location. By 9 a.m., students and staff resumed their normal schedules.
Please know that our response has always been—and will continue to be—to err on the side of student and staff safety with a thorough and multi-faceted response in any instance that might affect the security of our school community. I’d like to thank all Big Cross families for your cooperation this morning.
