March 16, 2018— Two of Glens Falls' best student-musicians performed in a prestigious honor band in Central New York the weekend of March 2-4!

"We had two very talented saxophonists travel to Liverpool, NY this year to attend the New York State Band Directors Association (NYSBDA) annual Winter Symposium," says middle and high school band director Jeremy Bouteiller.

Eighth-grader Peyton Catarelli performed on Baritone Saxophone on Saturday with the Middle School Honors Band. He worked with guest conductor Dr. Milt Allen. The group performed four pieces which included Fanfare for the Third Planet by Richard Saucedo, Primary Colors by James Curnow, Earthdance by Michael Sweeney, and also featured a world premier of Exhale by Sean O'Loughlin, which was commissioned specifically for the 2018 MS Honors Band.

Sophomore Sean Pettis performed in the High School Jazz Ensemble on Sunday, sitting in the Alto 2 chair and worked with conductor and jazz drummer Sherrie Maricle, whose award winning all female jazz ensemble DIVA also performed the previous night. Sean performed five extremely difficult pieces which included The Claw - one of DIVA's original pieces, and Horn of Puente which featured Sean with an improvised solo.

"Both groups were missing a large number of musicians the first day of rehearsals due to the nasty winter weather we had, but both concerts turned out absolutely amazing," said Mr. Bouteiller. "In Peyton's case, the whole group only was able to rehearse for one day with everyone present, and yet sounded like a professional level ensemble!"

NYSBDA is a not-for-profit educational organization dedicated to providing enrichment experiences for band teachers, enhancing the quality of instrumental music programs, and providing high quality performance opportunities for outstanding music students in the state of New York.
