Glens Falls Odyssey team heading to world finalsGroup of smiling students holding trophy and 1st place envelope

May 14, 2018 —
Next week, a Glens Falls Odyssey of the Mind team is headed to the world championships of creative problem-solving!

The blended team of Ellie  Paigo, Lucy Paigo, and Aubrie Spencer from Jackson Heights, and Nick Marsh, Nicholas Candido, Rebecca McPhee, and Fiona Poole from Kensington will take their creative “Mockumentary” of Peter Pan to the world finals at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, May 23-26. They’ve already won first place in regionals, and second place in New York State competition.

“The kids have designed a set, written a script, and put together costumes in a documentary-style skit which has garnered many laughs from the audience and kept the coaches and parents on the edges of their seats,” says parent volunteer Brigit Culligan. “This whole competition is for students to stretch their creativity and learn important 21st century skills such as teamwork and collaboration. It has been an adventure to see this group of two boys and five girls bring their own styles and personalities into this team.”

Throughout the Odyssey of the Mind competition, teams show off their solutions to one of five long-term problems—in under 8 minutes, start to finish. Each team is also challenged with a “spontaneous problem,” which they had to solve on the spot.

Three teams from Glens Falls Middle School, Jackson Heights, and Kensington all competed in earlier rounds of the tournament. [ Read story here ]
