May 31, 2018 —
Cheering fans recognized many of Glens Falls’ senior athletes at the Grandstanders Senior Sports Award Banquet on Tuesday, May 29. More than a hundred people attended the annual celebratory dinner at the Great Escape Lodge, where student-athletes in every sport were honored for their accomplishments.

Grandstanders’ 2018 Senior Sports Award scholarship winners are: Christopher Hughes (Track, Indoor Track, Cross Country); Taylor Scarincio (Swimming, Softball, Basketball); Andrew Rizzo (Ice Hockey, Football, Baseball); Kailyn Anselment (Swimming, Lacrosse); Nolan Hogan (Swimming, Soccer, Lacrosse); and Katelynn Mello (Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Track & Field).

“All six winners epitomize what it means to be a student athlete," said Athletic Director Chip Corlew. "They are hardworking, dedicated, and kind. These individuals inspire everyone around them to be the best they can be. They are known for their moral character—they all do the right thing and lead others to do the same."

To be considered for one of the $500 scholarships, the student-athletes must have maintained at least a “B” average, be a solid role model, and letter in at least one varsity sport.

The featured speaker at this year’s dinner was alumnus Colin Duell (GFHS 2014), who played football, baseball, and swam for Glens Falls. He swam at the collegiate level for SUNY New Paltz, specializing in breaststroke and butterfly.

The Grandstanders Sports Booster Club's mission is to promote and support all Glens Falls athletic programs by providing financial assistance and a volunteer "workforce" to help provide a quality experience for every student athlete. To date, the club has provided more than $50,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors, special speakers and trainers to work with all athletes, pitching machines, weight belts and vests, a basketball shoot-a-way, scoring tables, a sound system, Varsity team photos for all team members, and much more.

Additionally, the Grandstanders were instrumental in establishing the Glens Falls Athletic Hall of fame, which has inducted ten classes to date. The group sponsors and helps staff the annual George Muse Track Invitational, Matmania Wrestling Tournament, and various sectional/regional competitions.
