Kensington playground pirate ship damage

We are sad to report that the storms of July 16th caused significant structural damage to the starship “pirate ship” structure on Kensington’s playground. Wind and falling branches cracked multiple support beams and other elements, leading us to the difficult decision to dismantle the entire ship structure. Our grounds crews have begun the process of taking the ship apart.

As many of us know, this is the beloved “Geoffrey’s Energizer Starship,” built and dedicated to the memory of 8-year old Geoffrey Sommo, a student at KRS who passed away in 2000. In order to continue honoring his memory, several pieces of the ship are being carefully saved so they can be used in a new structure for students to enjoy going forward. Specifically, Geoffrey’s dedication plaque and the porthole faces are among the salvageable items and will be preserved.

We look forward to creating a new playground piece that will honor Geoffrey and celebrate our unity as a school community.
