This week, GF Nation is celebrating the many school staff members who make learning possible — our Education Support Professionals! We’re kicking it off by featuring Allison Hughes, Attendance Clerk at Big Cross Street School. Allison has been a valuable member of the “Better Together” Big Cross team for four years now, having started as a teaching assistant. Though she just stepped into the attendance role this September, she is not new to GF Nation as she is a graduate of “dear old Glens Falls High!”
“The most rewarding part of my job is being able to get to know our families and students,” says Mrs. Hughes. “I enjoy the opportunity to be of service in any way I can, and I am happy to help families with any questions they may have.”
“She handles paperwork, various phone calls, organizes files, and always greets families with a smile!” says Principal Paul Morcone. “Allison is outgoing with faculty, staff and families. She takes pride in her professionalism and confidentiality.”
Day to day, Mrs. Hughes connects with students and families as they come into the building or over the phone. She also helps with the hustle and bustle of the office, depending on whatever is needed. She says her transition from the classroom into attendance has been wonderful. “While I have not been working in education for long, I have found that being flexible is essential both in the classroom and the office,” she says.
“I hope to help students achieve the best attendance possible by following up with families to discuss attendance matters for their child,” she notes. “I also help track attendance trends for our building by grade level. We are having a great year!” She’s right—Big Cross has reduced its chronic absenteeism rate by a whopping 17 percentage points between the fall of 2022 and fall of 2024, thanks to a school-wide approach to meeting student and family needs!
Outside of work, Allison loves to spend time with her family and be outside as much as possible. “We are grateful to have her here at Big Cross!,” Mr. Morcone says.
Throughout the week, Nov. 18-22, we are highlighting our “school superheroes” whose various careers touch the lives of our students and pave the way for success! Education Support Professionals—our teacher aides, teaching assistants, secretaries, custodians, and many other team members—play a crucial role in every school building, every day. Check back every day this week to read about our superhero team members who are being honored during ESP Week 2024!
