It’s National Education Support Professionals Day, and we’re celebrating all week here in GF Nation! Today, let’s meet Amy Kraft, Teacher Aide with Shannon Fox’s kindergarten class at Kensington Road School! Their class nickname is “the dream team,” and whether they’re sounding out words or offering up facts about Thomas Jefferson, Mrs. Kraft never misses a beat—helping a student tap out syllables in one moment, and tying a stray shoelace in the next.
“The most unique part of my job is attempting to master the delicate balance of knowing when to step in and help or step back and let them learn what independence feels like,” Amy says. “It’s magical to see their faces light up when they accomplish a task that they once struggled to complete.”
“Success looks different for each child,” she continues. “For some, building self-confidence is paramount. For others, learning about boundaries and rules is key. Meeting each child where they are is the goal. I work with and support Shannon so our little students feel loved and valued as important members of the class.”
Principal Marissa Macey notices Amy’s personalized approach every day. “Amy takes the time to connect with each child individually, helping them feel seen and supported,” Mrs. Macey says. “She consistently demonstrates both professionalism and warmth. She collaborates with the classroom teacher and maintains such positive energy throughout the day. She truly helps make the classroom a place where children feel safe to learn, explore, and grow.”
Mrs. Kraft says she’s seen technology sweep into education, with smartboards and laptops becoming mainstream, even in the youngest classrooms. “I have had to learn to incorporate this as a learning tool, and the 5-year-olds help me a lot in this endeavor! I am a nurturer, a hand holder; but I realized many years ago how much gratification there is in perseverance… for me and them!”
Amy grew up in Vermont and went to UVM. This is her third year at Kensington, moving here from Long Island where she taught preschool for 14 years at The GreenVale School. When not at work, she treasures time with her family (who she moved closer to), whether playing tennis, pickle ball or hiking. “When we are together, my heart is happy.”
Throughout the week, Nov. 18-22, we are highlighting our “school superheroes” whose various careers touch the lives of our students and pave the way for success! Education Support Professionals—our teacher aides, teaching assistants, secretaries, custodians, and many other team members—play a crucial role in every school building, every day. Check back every day this week to read about our superhero team members who are being honored during ESP Week 2024!
